Buglasan back to October
The clamor of Dumaguetenos was heard as the celebration of the Buglasan Festival of Festivals this year is slated October 16 to 26.
To recall, the City Government last year under the administration of Governor Emilio Macias II moved the Buglasan activities to December. The governor saw the significance of holding the event in the said month. (See related post)
Residents of the City of Gentle People as well as the whole province criticized the festival’s postponement. Some welcomed it, saying they would spend the holiday season in Dumaguete and watch the Buglasan. Others though were dismayed of the governor’s decision.
We posted an article here regarding the change of Buglasan’s schedule and viewers of Dumaguete Life aired their disappointment on the move of city officials. (See related post)
However, this year the festivity is back to the third week of October.
For whatever reason the City Government had, I still would laud them for such a decision. I think the postponement last year was just an experimental thing to see how people would react to it.
City officials probably saw the negative effect of holding the Buglasan Festival other than the month of October.
Tourism sector would suffer as a consequence. It is a fact that many tourists knew the Buglasan is
celebrated every third week of the tenth month. Thus, changing it might confuse possible visitors to Dumaguete.
This should be taken into consideration. The Buglasan Festival is not only meant for residents, but also intended to draw in tourists, both local and foreign.
And so I say the move to celebrate Buglasan back to October is definitely a good decision. Dumaguetenos would be happy to hear this news.
Rest assured, Dumaguete Life will keep you posted on the series of activities lined up for the Buglasan 2008.
